Jean W. Carter
MD, FACOG
Dr. Jean Carter grew up in Kinston, NC. She earned both her Bachelor's and Medical degrees at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston in 1982. For the next four years, she practiced in Lafayette, IN while her husband, Mike, earned his Ph.D. from Purdue. Afterwards, the pair was finally able to return home to North Carolina.
In 1986, Dr. Carter joined the practice of her two most admired role models, Dr. Annie Louise Wilkerson and her niece, Dr. Mary Susan Fulghum. “Although Dr. Fulghum has retired and Dr. Annie is no longer with us, I am still proud that our practice carries their family name and I strive every day to live up to their standards of skilled and compassionate care.”
"I have always believed in empowering my patients with the knowledge and confidence they need to make the best decisions for their lives. I feel privileged to be able to be a part of my patients' lives from their emergence from childhood into the rich years after menopause.”
Dr. Carter is Board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is a member of the Rex Healthcare Board of Trustees and has recently completed several years of service on the UNC Healthcare System Board of Directors. She lives with her husband, Mike, who is an Associate Dean and Professor at North Carolina State University. They discovered years ago that they were unable to have children, and have re-directed that energy into great joy and satisfaction in their professions. Dr. Carter enjoys knitting, quilting, cooking and music.
James A. Mong
MD, FACOG
Dr. Mong was born and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and graduated in 1976 with a BS in Zoology. While there, he was honored to be a teaching assistant for Mammalian Anatomy (where he met his future wife) and was also inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.
He went to medical school at the University of Cincinnati and graduated in 1980. Dr. Mong was inducted into the medical honorary Alpha Omega Alpha while there. His internship and residency were secured at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, Memorial Hospital. After completing his residency in 1984, Dr. Mong looked for a position in North Carolina – having fallen in love with the weather and the varied landscapes within the state. He joined the Wilkerson group in July of 1984 and has remained here since that time.
Dr. Mong's favorite activities generally involve outdoor pursuits such as camping, hiking, kayaking and boating. He is still married to that gal from Mammalian Anatomy, has two children and many pets. Dr. Mong is active in his church and is part of a medical group that works in Guatemala to assist in the medical care of an underserved population.
A. Michele Martin
MD, FACOG
Dr. Michele Martin was born in Raleigh and was delivered by the founder of the practice, Dr. Annie Louise Wilkerson. She was raised, however, on a farm in Stokes County, North Carolina. She received her BS in zoology at NC State University and that is where she met her wonderful husband, Dr. Michael Buckley. He is also an obstetrician and yes, they rarely see each other at night.
Dr. Martin attended medical school at East Carolina University and completed her OB/GYN residency training there as well. She has been practicing at Wilkerson OB/GYN for over ten years. Dr. Martin has 2 small children; daughter Tyler and son, Evan. If she ever has down time, she enjoys watching ACC sports, gardening, going to the beach and playing with her children.
Andrea D. Roche
MD, FACOG
Dr. Andrea Roche is board certified and has been practicing obstetrics and gynecology in Raleigh since 2001. She was born in Ohio and grew up in North and South Carolina. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she earned her undergraduate degrees in English and Chemistry with honors. She also managed to learn to scuba dive, study literature in England and to meet the man of her dreams along the way. Dr. Roche so loved Chapel Hill (and Michael whom she soon married) that she decided to stay for medical school. She then completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Ohio State University.
Dr. Roche was eager to return to the warmth of the Triangle to settle and raise a family, and she is pleased to be a part of Wilkerson OB/GYN. She loves her job and especially appreciates the opportunity to build relationships with her patients, caring for them through both the joyful as well as the difficult times. She is most happy when spending time with her husband and three energetic children, Vincent, Jack and Chelsea. If any free time can be found, she also enjoys movies, cooking, travel and curling up with a good book.
Phelicia C. Flanagan
MD, FACOG
Dr. Phelicia Flanagan grew up in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. She graduated in the first baccalaureate class at Peace College in Raleigh with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. She then attended The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University as a Brody Scholar. While in medical school, she became a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. She then completed her OB/GYN residency at The Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia in 2005.
Dr. Flanagan and her husband, Benji, knew they wanted to return to Raleigh after spending a few years here before she entered medical school. “Although I have only been with Wilkerson OB/GYN since 2005, I hope this is where I practice for the rest of my career. I look forward to taking care of patients through many stages of their lives.”
In her spare time away from Wilkerson OB/GYN, Dr. Flanagan enjoys exercising, watching sports and spending time with her family (husband, Benji; daughter, Claire and their beloved Vizsla, Zoey).
Michelle M. Homeister
MD, FACOG
Dr. Michelle Homeister and her family are excited to have made Raleigh home since 2005, but she was born and raised in Michigan. She received her Bachelor of Science from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and remained there performing biomedical research for several years thereafter. She then earned her medical degree from the Michigan State College of Human Medicine in East Lansing, Michigan and continued at MSU-CHM for her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan. Following training she spent five years in private practice in Flint. Michelle was a Clinical Instructor at the College of Human Medicine and helped to supervise the Resident's clinic at Hurley. The Homeisters moved to Raleigh when her husband joined the faculty at the UNC School of Medicine. Michelle practiced with another OB/GYN group in Raleigh before proudly joining Wilkerson in August 2008.
The Drs. Homeisters have two sons, ages 5 and 8 years old. Michelle loves the social and professional opportunities of Raleigh, as well as the relaxation of the North Carolina beaches and mountains. She loves outdoor activities including gardening, biking, and hiking, and loves to spend time with her boys, husband, and the family's dogs, a Vizsla and a Weimaraner.
